by Dr. Christopher Notley
Muscles Stretched
Start Position
- Standing upright
- Grab above the ankle with hand on same side as the leg being stretched
- Knees together
- Place other hand on partner, wall or counter.
Finish Position
- Pull heel towards buttocks
- Upper body remains upright
Common Errors
- Leaning forwards.
- Turning thigh so that the front of the thigh turns out.
- Grabbing foot rather than above the ankle.
- Allowing the knee to move out to the side.
Modifications
- If the heel reaches the buttocks and the stretch is not enough extend the thigh back and thrust the hip forward.
- Loop a towel around the ankle and hold onto the ends of the towel
Other Options
- Quadriceps towel stretch
- Side lying quadriceps stretch
